STMicroelectronics’ AMOLED power management IC improves the viewing experience and battery life of portable devices

Geneva, April 6, 2022 – STMicroelectronics’ new fully integrated power management IC (PMIC) for AMOLED displays combines low quiescent current and increased flexibility to extend battery life in portable devices.

With an input voltage range of 2.9 V to 4.8 V, the PMIC STMP30 contains three built-in DC-DC converters to provide all the power rails needed for AMOLED displays in smartphones and other portable devices. The 550mA VOUT1 boost converter has an adjustable output voltage, unlike other devices which fix VOUT1 at 4.6V. The voltage can be adjusted between 4.6 V and 5.0 V, in 100 mV increments, to optimize screen brightness for minimum power consumption and better visibility in all conditions. The maximum setting of 5.0V allows the use of High Brightness Mode (HBM) for better viewing in bright outdoor lighting.

The remaining two outputs are provided by a single-phase 550mA buck-boost inverter, programmable from -0.8V to -6.6V, and a 5.5V to 7.9V 150mA boost converter. Output voltages are programmed using the Single-Wire (S-Wire) protocol via external pins. The PMIC also receives S-Wire messages to operate the AMOLED in Always-On Display (AOD) mode, which improves user convenience by displaying on-screen information continuously at very low power.

The PMIC features a true shutdown mode that maximizes power savings, as well as safety features such as thermal protection, input undervoltage lockout, and soft start with power limiting. inrush current. In addition, the high-voltage outputs feature fast-discharge circuitry and offer short-circuit protection.
