PoE 2 controllers offer advanced power management features

The Analog Devices Inc. LTC9101-1, LTC9102, and LTC9103 PoE 2 controllers, available now from Mouser, are created for use with IEEE 802.3at Type 2, 802.3bt Type 3, and 4 compliant PoE systems. They implement up to 24 (71.3 W) four-pair PSE ports or 48 (25.5 W) two-pair PSE ports in an endpoint or midspan application. Virtually all necessary circuitry is incorporated to implement an IEEE 802.3bt-compliant PSE design, requiring one pair of external power MOSFETs and sense resistors per port. This integration reduces power loss compared to alternative designs with on-board MOSFETs and increases system reliability.
Advanced device power management features include per-port 14-bit current/power monitoring, programmable current/power limits, and versatile fast shutdown of preselected ports. An advanced power management host software layer is offered. PD detection uses a proprietary multipoint detection mechanism, providing excellent immunity against false PD identifications. Auto class detection and five-event physical classification are supported.
The PoE 2 chipset includes an I2C serial interface that can be used up to 1 MHz. These devices are pin- or I2C-programmable to negotiate PD-delivered power up to 71.3W.
The LTC9101-1 is supplied in a 4mm x 4mm QFN-24 package. The LTC9102 and LTC9103 are offered in a 7mm x 11mm QFN-64 package. All three devices have an operating temperature range of -40 C to +125 C.
