Diatom is an energy harvesting chip from Nowi that features an inductorless design and integrated power management. The device, supplied in a 28-lead 4×4mm QFN package, helps reduce both implementation cost and area in a variety of low-power applications.
Diatom has a wide input power range from microwatts to milliwatts and uses Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) to achieve high harvesting efficiency. It extracts power output from a variety of energy harvesters to charge energy storage elements such as rechargeable batteries and supercapacitors. A cold start feature enables battery-less designs, reducing battery maintenance while providing a more durable option. The chip also offers regulated output, overvoltage protection, and USB charging.
By combining energy harvesting and power management in a single device, Diatom simplifies the design process and lowers the threshold for any company to develop energy self-sufficient products. Applications for the room range from smart home to industry/retail 4.0 IoT devices, as well as space-constrained wearables, remotes and smart tags.
A datasheet for the Diatom Energy Harvesting PMIC (NH16D3045) was not available at the time of this announcement.
