Gigabyte is a relatively new name in the PSU (Power Supply Unit) segment, but it has deep roots in the market with several offerings dating back to the early 2010s. The previous lineup was a mix of premium and generic offerings, but it’s only recently that the brand has decided to streamline its offerings into various segments, including AORUS, UD and the more standard “P/G” offerings. While the AORUS offerings are the most premium designs, the UD range offers some of the most cost effective offerings. The UD mark stands for “Ultra Durable,” which has been Gigabyte’s design philosophy for generations. Today we’re going to be looking at not one but two of Gigabyte’s latest UD series PSUs, the UD1000GM and UD750GM.

Coming straight to the specs, the Gigabyte UD1000GM PG5 is rated at 1000W while the UD750GM is rated at 750W. At the top level, these two PSUs feature similar specs, with an ultra-durable design comprised of main Japanese capacitors, an improved heatsink solution, a 120mm Smart Hydraulic Bearing (HYB) fan, and a range of protection which includes OVP (Over Voltage Protection) /OPP (Over Voltage Protection) /SCP (Short Circuit Protection) / UVP (Under Voltage Protection) / OCP (Over Current Protection) / OTP (Over Current Protection) overheating).

Again, both PSUs are based on the 80+ Gold standard and offer a fully modular design and powerful single +12V rail, all in a compact design backed by a ten-year warranty. 80 Plus Gold rating guarantees 90% efficiency at 50% load. The output current of the 1000 W unit is rated at 83.3 A (+12 V) for a maximum combined power of 999.6 W while the 750 unit is rated at 61 A (+12 V) for a maximum combined power of 732W. Both units are also Intel ATX 12V v2.31 compatible.

As for the PSU design, both come in an ATX form factor and measure 150 x 140 x 86mm. Gigabyte calls it a compact design compared to standard power supply offerings, which allows for easier installation in almost any PC chassis without worrying about space constraints. Moving on to cooling, the compartment features a single 120mm Smart Hydraulic Bearing (HYB) fan, delivering 1.4x longer life than standard sleeve bearing fans. As for the acoustics, the hydraulic fan automatically adjusts the fan speed according to the load of the PSU. If the wattage stays below 150 watts, the fan will go into sleep mode and not spin while automatically adjusting to 150 watts.

There are also heatsinks used in the PSU compartment which feature 200% larger volume and more fins for optimized airflow. Gigabyte claims to have increased heat dissipation by 10% on its new UDGM series power supplies. The 10% figure is obtained by measuring different PSU components such as the PFC MOS temp which sees a 6% temperature reduction, a 13% decrease on the LLC MOS and a 14.5% decrease on the SR MOS.

As for the UD1000GM PG5, it comes with the latest PCIe Gen 5.0 (16 pin) connector which delivers 600W native power. This will allow the GPU to be fully compatible with next generation PCIe Gen 5.0 compatible graphics cards .

The units we received came in standard black and orange packaging with a picture of the power supply on the front. The front also lists several features such as its fully modular design, major Japanese capacitors, and smart fan technology infused into the 120mm HYB fan.

The back also offers a list of features that we detailed above and we’ll go into more detail in our teardown in a moment.

In the packaging, the PSU is held between foam wraps to protect it during shipping while the cables are supplied in their own separate plastic sleeve. There are also four screws included with the PSU for installation in your case with a power cord.

The PSU itself is encased in a top and bottom foam cover.

The PSU also packs a lot of weight, giving you an idea of ​​the quality components it contains.

On the back, you can see the power jack, power switch, and a large mesh panel that acts as an exhaust vent.

Now, depending on how you use the PSU, the bottom panel reads specs and power ratings.

As for connectors, there are two 8-pin CPU connectors, one 24-pin ATX (14+10-pin) ATX connector, and three 5-pin connectors for peripherals. The UD1000GM PG5 comes with a single 8-pin CPU/PCIe connector that produces two 8-pin connectors and one 16-pin Gen 5 connector, while the UD750GM comes with a three 8-pin PCIe connector configuration.

The cables in the packaging pouch include the ATX 20+4 pin, two CPU 4+4 pin connectors, 4 PCIe 6+2 connectors, 8 SATA connectors, 3 MOLEX connectors and a single floppy connector. The UD1000GM comes with a single PCIe Gen 5 cable.

Final impressions of the Gigabyte UD1000GM PG5 and UD750GM 80+ Gold PSUs

Coming to the final impressions, we must first state the price. The Gigabyte UD1000GM PG5 is currently listed at Newegg for US$159.99 while the UD750GM is listed for US$129.99. These are very good prices, especially considering the 1000W unit that comes with PCIe Gen 5.0 compliance. Now, the PSU isn’t a true ATX 3.0 design, but it’s still ready for next-gen graphics cards with up to 600W of power requirement. The UD750GM is decently priced, but it competes in a heavily saturated market where several units are currently priced closer to US$100.

In terms of features offered by Gigabyte, both UD GM series offer a comprehensive list of voltage and power fluctuation protection. The main question on everyone’s mind would be whether these PSUs will explode in the same way as Gigabyte’s previous P GM attempt? Well, the answer is that the problem is mostly fixed in the new revision and Gigabyte has learned a lot from its previous attempt and won’t want to repeat that. I will say that in my time testing both units, even under a full load of an overclocked RTX 3090 Ti graphics card and an overclocked Core i9-12900K CPU, I did not experience any power issues. no random reboots, not to mention the PSU blowing at the top. So overall Gigabyte has a decent offering that’s very good price-wise when it comes to 1000W Gen 5 designs. I’ll be testing them more in the coming months to see how they react to different types of hardware and will put more pressure on them through overclocking tests, but for now I find these units to be just fine for your newer PC builds.
